Batch 2 of STEP-UP Program’s Medical Coding Class with their certificates of completion from the AAPC
Two trainees of Career First Institute’s STEP-UP Program graduate cum laude after receiving the highest scores on the medical coding certification exams held last June 24 th . Marni Espina and Apple Traya from Batch 2 got 91% and 94%, respectively.
Additionally, all 18 members of the same batch passed the certification exams with flying colors, earning an average score of 81.4%.
“My high score will be impossible if not for the people behind STEP-UP. Not only did they teach us how to code, they also taught us how to win. I thank them for their part in my journey,” says Apple.
Marni accepts that the training they underwent to be certified medical coders was a lot of times challenging, but he maintains “it is comforting to know that whenever we had a question, expert instructors and helpful coaches were present to attend to us right away.”
The cum laude standing is granted by certification body American Association of Professional Coders (AAPC) to any one who achieves a cumulative score of 90% and above.
As part of STEP-UP Program’s corporate partnership agreement with PracticeMax, the Batch 2 graduates have been offered contracts, which mainly include employment as professional medical coder into PracticeMax’s Cebu base located at Robinson’s Galleria in the heart of the city.
PracticeMax is a relatively new player in the Philippines’ buzzing BPO industry and is the first to offer long-term medical coding positions in Cebu. The Arizona- based firm is also present in Texas, New York and Louisiana in the US. The company takes with it 31 years of experience, providing business management and information technology solutions to healthcare providers.

STEP-UP Opens Door for More Partners
Career First continues to work double time to replicate the STEP-UP concept with other potential partners who are looking to invest in Cebu. The partnership will allow medical coding companies to get expert guidance in recruiting and building their teams, not to mention train people in preparation for coding certifications.
The company boasts of a solid recruitment powerhouse and is duly licensed by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE). Its medical coding instructors are all certified and competent to teach as many classes as the need arises.
Moreover, Career First Institute has made a mark of excellence in healthcare education since the beginning of Subsidized Training and Employment Partnership Program (a.k.a. STEP-UP) in January 2017. Since then, over 35 trainees have graduated and taken the AAPC exams to become certified professional coders (CPC). Its main thrust is to match potential employers (huge industry players in their own right) with job aspirants who possess enough skills and determination, through a strict evaluation process.
